GIVING BACK TO DC
Founded in 2003, The Madison of Washington, DC is a women's professional, civic, and social organization in the greater District of Columbia area. Our members represent a broad range of education, careers, and beliefs, but are united by a dedication to service, friendship, professional growth, and pride in our DC community.
Each year Members of The Madison propose various organizations to dedicate the year’s fundraising efforts towards. The 2021 Members overwhelmingly voted to support The Endometriosis Foundation of America (EndoFound). “I am so proud to share that The Madison has achieved our goal of raising $10,000 for the EndoFound in 2021,” said President Emily Burdick. “This disease impacts 1 in 10 women– and personally affects two of my very best friends. One of the primary missions of the EndoFound is to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and effective intervention. It is my hope that by supporting EndoFound this year, the Madison not only supported this mission financially but also brought attention to a disease that many of our Members and Friends of The Madison may not have otherwise been aware of.”
Endometriosis is a disease suffered by women, and it occurs when tissue similar to the inner lining of the uterus, also known as the endometrium, is found outside its normal location, where the tissue should not be. This may result in inflammation, as the tissue even outside the uterus will respond to the monthly fluctuations of the menstrual cycle. The disease affects 1 in 10 reproductive-aged individuals (aged 12-52) - an estimated 200 million women worldwide - and many often experience a decade-long delay in diagnosis. Currently, there is no known exact cause of endometriosis, and there is no cure. - The Endometriosis Foundation of America
The Madison has been honored to partner with a philanthropy that directly impacts the health of our membership, and women worldwide. Throughout the year, The Madison of DC collaborated with local businesses to host several events benefiting EndoFound, including a special National Philanthropy Day Membership event with Dacha Beer Garden. Philanthropy Chair Jacquelyn Incerto reflects, “It has been such a pleasure working with the Endometriosis Foundation of America. The Madison and The Endometriosis Foundation of America empower women to support each other, to get involved and spread awareness about critical women's health issues, and to increase research in an area that needs investment. Our members are passionate and empowered through this relationship, and we’ve seen enormous support from not only our members but friends and DC businesses all across the city. It's been a really powerful and impactful experience watching it all come together.”
